Question and Answer Archive
Q: Can the default settings be changed for dynamic blocks (would want the flanged valve to be default instead of welded).
A: Absolutely, the dynamic block can be set up to have any one of the graphic options as the default.
Q: what are the benefits of using a database? Which DB can be used?
A: SQL or ACCESS or Oracle. This will be covered in the next Webinar in detail but here are a few key benefits:
• Project wide collaboration between engineering, management and design working concurrently in the same data set, (change once update everywhere).
• Instant access to project wide reporting by anyone with data access
• Up to date material takeoffs for P&ID items such as valves, equipment, instruments, lines, etc.
• This eliminates the need for manual takeoffs from each drawing
Q: How do you move Equipment without moving the tag?
A: You simply use AutoCAD stretch and Cross through the equipment and not the tag or hold down shift and click on the tag to remove it from the selection set.
Then you can move the equipment where you want and the tag stays in place.
Q: How customizable is the equip. data filed dialog box?
A: 100%, the user has complete control of the information contained by modifying the block to have the attributes desired and/or in the case of using the live database with P&ID Professional the user can add any columns they wish to the database without limitation.
Q: What if you want different attributes than the ones that come standard?
A: No issue, you can add any attributes you require. Simply open the block in regular AutoCAD and make any changes or additions you want to the attributes, move them around, change text styles and sizes, etc. CADWorx P&ID will work with any AutoCAD blocks, even the ones you’re already using. Just get the blocks like you want them and then add them to the CADWorx P&ID menu through the Menu Symbol Editor utility- very simple!
Q:How can the area be included in the tag name so that unit relative P&IDs can be generated i.e. in the bubble there will be 26 TIC 001 (AREA Function and Unique Number?
A: Simply add an AREA attribute to the instrument symbol blocks where you want that information displayed in the block:
Q: Will web session 3 cover ECE specific tools
A: No, session 3 is about CADWorx Internet Publisher, we will follow up at a later date with webinars on ECE tools. In the meantime you can review previous webinars which have showcased ECE tools such as PIDMO can be seen in use at the below webinars.

In this second Webinar, ECE Design demonstrated how easy it is to add the database functionality to CADWorx P&ID. Enabling the database, allows users to further leverage their P&ID's by providing a place to manage and store all the associated P&ID data. In addition, ECE explored included utilities for converting existing AutoCAD based block and attribute P&ID’s into CADWorx intelligent P&ID’s.
Q: When you add documentation in the component dialog box, can the document be a hyperlink rather than an actual file?
A: No. When you enter a hyperlink the system will bring the file down local to your drive. However you can setup a document that contains the hyperlink and link the component to the document such as a Word or Excel file.
Q: Can P&ID function with AutoCAD LT?
A: No. A full version of AutoCAD is required. As an AutoCAD Bundler, ECE can assist with your AutoCAD needs.
Q: Is CADWorx P&ID Professional included in the purchase of CADWorx Plant Professional 2010?
A: No. However, CADWorx Plant Professional does currently ship with a free copy of CADWorx P&ID Standard. Please note that this copy is tied to the same license key. The free copy of P&ID Standard can be upgraded to P&ID Professional for an upgrade fee of $1500 which is a savings of $1000 or more depending on whether your Plant Pro is stand alone or a network license.
Q: Will CADWorx work with existing access database or do you have to let it create its own database?
A: The Access or SQL or Oracle database used by CADWorx is not proprietary in any form. However, certain tables and fields are required by CADWorx. The user can add as many fields to the required tables and the system will accommodate up to 10 additional user defined tables. If a more in depth answer is required then please contact us at ECE Design.
Q: Can you work on the remaining drawings if one of the drawings is checked out? Basically, can you work on both sets (checked out and not checked out) at the same time? Finally, will the database pick up and merge all changes made on both sets
A: Yes, Yes, and Yes.
Q: If you copy a line to a new file, when you place in into the new file the line has been broken into segments. How can the program maintain the connection?
A: Lines copied from one drawing to another or lines imported into a database project can be reconnected using a utility in CADWorx P&ID called COMBINELINES. This function will combine multiple segments into a single process line entry in the database and allow the user to pick the To/From for that line.
Q: Can you use xdata to add attributed line numbers not assoicated with cadworx?
A: This question needs clarification. If you’re asking if you can make a non-CADWorx line intelligent with CADWorx xdata the answer is yes, you can use the XDATAADD function in CADWorx P&ID Professional to add CADWorx xdata to any component from regular AutoCAD including lines.
If your question is can you add xdata to an attribute line number string of text from AutoCAD the answer is no, line xdata can only be added to a line or polyline and the only attribute for lines that can be displayed in the drawing is the line number tag value, other attributes cannot be associated with the polyline.

In this third and final webinar in the series, ECE demonstrated CADWorx P&ID ability to publish drawings and data using CADWorx IP. This collaboration tool allows companies to effortlessly publish P&ID drawings, data and related documents so they can be accessed using Internet Explorer. Imagine pulling up your web browser and clicking on the temperature transmitter to access a service manual or the calibration.
Q: Can you rename the link in the Index.html to reference another filename rather than BannerRight.gif rather than copying over?
A: Yes, you can name the banner logos anything you like you simply have to edit the "Header.htm" file located in the Frames folder under the published project and replace the file names with your file names:
So many projects require great attention to welding and our Bill Vasey continues to provide consulting services as Certified Welding Inspector(CWI) on methods to improve the documentation process. ECE Design understands the necessity for sound welds whether they are for industrial process piping (ASME B3.#) or the demanding requirements of Hygienic piping (ASME BPE). During this session, ECE will demonstrate how to leverage CADWorx to produce weld maps and the associated inspection forms that can be used to service most piping projects.

Over the years, ECE has found that linking drawing files and documents to a project is not good enough. We find great benefits to linking them to a CADWorx P&ID or Asset TAG. During this session we will demonstrate how simple this linking process can be with Adept and how Adept offers revision control and searching capabilities. This process can be applied to any document and therefore provides project team members that ability to find all documents associated with a TAG and their revisions.
ECE will demonstrate how CADWorx PLANT Professional and PLANTMO combine functions to generate bill of materials for Pipe Supports. Almost everyone has agreed that having a pipe support bill of material would be beneficial to projects. In addition to bill of materials, ECE will demonstrate how piping support details can be priced real-time so that a total project cost can be estimated.
Isogen Isometric drawing revision control is usually a challenge because these drawing files can be automatically produced at any time. This automatic drawing generation typically results in multiple copies of the same record being produced.
This webinar demonstrates how Isogen, PLANTMO-CAD and DOCMO, an pre configured Adept document management application, integrate to manage isometric drawing production workflow. This workflow ensures that an automatic revision control system is in place for Isometric Drawings.
CADWorx Plant Professional can be used very effectively on hygienic projects. The pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry has some very unique piping design requirements that CADWorx has been able to address since its introduction in 1996. This session will demonstrate how to apply the "out of the box" features and functions to create detailed piping designs. ECE will present techniques to model some of the more inline components like Multi-Port diaphragm valves, Sterile Access ports, Filter Housings and alike. In addition, we'll present some techniques to address the "Validation" requirements of this industry such dead legs, sloped piping and weld mapping.

ECE will discuss Intergraph CADWorx Plant and Intergraph CADWorx P&ID Professional database connections and the ease of extracting data with PIDMO and PLANTMO.
PIDMO is a database interface that allows CADWorx PLANT and CADWorx P&ID Professional users to leverage information stored in their process and instrument diagrams (P&ID) and 3D model drawings so that project managers, engineers, purchasing managers and other non-CAD users can import and export data from their project databases to and from Microsoft Excel. This sophisticated reporting tool enables users to easily access component information, filter for bills of materials (BOM), compile cost estimates, create project management worksheets and create Excel-based instrument and equipment datasheets with revision controls.
Further, PLANTMO, a CAD extension tool, allows designers to automatically apply project data updates to fabrication isometric drawings, populate ISOMETRIC drawings with Attribute Data, and generally manage the CADWorx user experience.
Question and Answer Archive
Q: Is the key on the importation referenced by the tag, drawing or something else?
A: The key field is the ID_COUNT as this is what CADWorx relies on.
Q: Will PIDMO eliminate to the need to manually set up the SQL Server? Will the "seed" file you talked about set up the tables we require via our input?
A: Yes! PIDMO uses a Seed Access Database to create the SQL Database Automatically. The Seed Database can be modified to fit the customer requirements.
Q: Does PIDMO have a limit to the number of users (like Access/Excel) or is it a stand alone program unique to each user?
A: PIDMO is a standalone program and uses the same software protection as CADWorx. There is a Stand-Alone (Green Key) and Network (Red Key) available. The Network Key can have as many users as necessary but as with CADWorx. The number of people using the Access Database is limited (by performance) to “x” number of users. “x” is determined by the Hardware being employed at the site, the network and Access itself.
Q: When you are importing the Excel file that has changes made to an instrument, does PIDMO reference the instrument number in the Excel file to an instrument number in the database?
A: PIDMO references the ID_COUNT as does CADWorx.
Q: I guess what I am getting at is what if you change/add/delete an instrument in the exported Excel file and then import that file into PIDMO, does it change the tag name, add a new instrument, delete the instrument?
A: If the ID_COUNT is no longer in the database because it was deleted on the P&ID then PIDMO will reject the record and it will not be imported. If the instrument was changed to a different type or tag then the ID_COUNT would still be valid. In this case, PIDMO would find the valid record and overwrite the data in the database. Care must be taken. There is security available in PIDMO to prevent unauthorized people from using the IMPORT functionality.
Q: With the push-pull capability of the reporting features, how does PIDMO handle the MOC process to be sure that the data imported is correct, approved for use, compliant with the project specifications and process design conditions?
A: PIDMO has security and the functionality. Care must be taken. Proper procedures must be in place.
CADWorx Plant and PLANTMO team up to offer a very effective way to push information from a CADWorx project database to isogen titleblocks. PLANTMO functions can automatically change isometric titleblock information and drawing numbers based upon CADWorx project data. In addition designers can open, move, delete and rename the isometric drawing files they create.
This session will demonstrate how to setup and use CADWorx Plant, Isogen, and PLANTMO to best manage titleblock information, filenames, and drawing numbers.
This session is intended for those individuals who are responsible for organizing, creating and delivering instrument and equipment datasheets.
ECE will present how PIDMO converts a manual process into a more controlled and automated process.
Witness how designers, engineers and vendors can now populate Excel worksheets which then are converted into datasheet deliverables while maintaining complete revision control.
CADWorx Plant and ElectroMOD can be used to effectively model and detail electrical hardware such as cable tray, conduit, panels, local disconnects and alike.
This webinar demonstrates how to setup and use CADWorx specifications for electrical hardware. It will also cover how to create electrical engineering deliverables that assists with clash detections and construction.
